Associate Tutor in Computing (Continuing Education)
John Axford originally graduated in Physics and comes to Kellogg from a long career in research and development with IBM.He has a wide experience of computing technology and in management.In more recent years, motivated by a desire to put something back into education, he has served on a number of national bodies including the Council for National Academic Awards, the Council of the Foundation for Science and Technology, and the former HEQC Degree Awarding Powers Committee.He also does accreditation work for the British Computer Society, and has served as Chairman of the BCS Accreditation Committee.He has recently been elected an Honorary Fellow of the BCS.
Upon retirement from industry he joined Continuing Professional Development in OUDCE and helped set up the MSc programme in Software Engineering.He now directs two undergraduate level awards in OUDCE and has helped pioneer one of the Department,s first awards to be delivered over the Internet.He believes this mode of learning has great potential in a wide variety of contexts and hopes to help extend it to other awards.He teaches computing, with a special emphasis on management skills.
John Axford is firmly dedicated to the aims and ethos of the College, in the pursuit of increased access and opportunity for lifelong learning, and especially for those who may have missed out on the more ,conventional, education routes.
Aside from academic matters, his other interests include fell walking and an amateur fascination with industrial archaeology.
