    Former Canisius College right-handed pitcher John Axford has signed a free-agent contract with the New York Yankees after attending workouts in Staten Island and Tampa.

    Axford was 3-8 with a 5.01 earned run average in 14 starts for the Golden Griffins last season and struck out 75 in 70 innings.He pitched this summer for the Melville Millionaires in the Western league and, in one seven-inning game, fanned 19.He struck out 17 in another.

    A transfer from Notre Dame, Axford started the 2003 season 9-0 with a 2.21 ERA.He missed the 2004 campaign due to Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery in December of 2003.

    As a freshman with the Irish, Axford was 5-2 with a 3.95 ERA, 64 strikeouts in 70.2 innings and pitched in the College World Series.
