Born in 1955 in Bracebridge, Muskoka, Martin Avery studied at the University of Victoria, Banff Centre School of Fine Arts, York University, New College Writers Workshop, Vermont College of Norwhich University (USA), the University of Toronto, Herstmonceux Castle of Queen's University (England), and the Stratford Campus of UT/OISE, earning an Hons.B.A., B.Ed., Hons.Spec.English, M.F.A. In Writing, A.Q. Drama.He also has Reiki 2, and a CISH.
He has taught Creative Writing for York University, Georgian College, Bridgewater Arts Retreat, Centauri Arts Retreat, for TWUC's Writers In The Schools Program, and the Writers Circle of Durham Region.For two decades, he was a full-time teacher at secondary schools in Ontario -- teaching Writers Craft, English, and Drama -- and was Arts Department Head at a small school in Muskoka.In 2004/2005 he was Writer In Residence for the Bracebridge Public Library, and in 2005/2006 he is Writer In Residence for the Pickering Public Library.
For the past five years, he has had a column on Arts & Education in Muskoka Today.He does freelance features and photography for Muskoka Magazine and others.Also, he is the creator of A Novel Marathon in Owen Sound and the Muskoka Novel Marathon at the Huntsville Festival of the Arts as special event fundraisers for literacy.This February, he will launch The Great Canadian Winter Novel Marathon, at the Pickering Public Library.
