Prostate cancer can certainly be life threatening and require near-term surgery or radiation, but in some men with less aggressive forms, a regimen of active surveillance may be advisable," says Anthony N. Avallone, MD, FACS, urologic oncologist at Goshen Center for Cancer Care. The advantage of this approach, he says, is the patient is able to avoid or postpone the discomfort of treatment and possible side effects, such as impotence, urinary incontinence and bowel problems.
