Bernard Avalle's fondest memories go back to his early childhood when he got a toy from a parade vendor.

"I was one of those kids who had to have a souvenir plastic sword," said Avalle.

Now the executive director of PCTV and his staff spends weeks preparing the parade's live broadcast, a skill he learned in the early 1980's while at WWLP-TV in Springfield when it used to televise the St. Patrick's Day Parade from Holyoke.

Bernard Avalle, executive director of Pittsfield Community Television, glimpsed the changed landscape of the new age of media while working on the crew of the live broadcasts of the girls softball world series this summer.

"I was watching the televised feed we were sending out on PCTV," he recalled.
    ...
"This has changed our ability to reach audiences," said Avalle.
    ...
Avalle noted that some residents of Ballina, the Irish sister city of Pittsfield, regularly watch city programs.
    ...
"It's an interactive side of PCTV," noted Avalle.

Serre and Avalle emphasized that primary focus of PCTV continues to be its cable channels; the online services are an auxiliary service to that.
    ...
"Our primary mission continues to be serving the community via our cable channels," said Avalle.
    ...
"That has made it possible to integrate the programming and streams into the web site more easily," Avalle said.

A sign on a filing cabinet in the office used by Executive Director Bernie Avalle and administrative assistant Jody Kordana says "Be nice or leave — Thank you."
    ...
"I feel good about it," Avalle said, "because it complements what our country is supposed to be about: to have freedom of speech by producing programming.
    ...
Edit Suite 2 allows cut-and-paste electronic editing, digital non-linear editing, according to Avalle.
    ...
"Tell us what you need; we got it," Avalle said.

Membership is required for direct use of PCTV's facilities and equipment via Access Pittsfield. An individual membership is $15 a year, and organizational memberships also are available, Avalle said. There is no charge for a member of the public to appear as a guest on a show on the channel; however, the person "making" the show has to be a member.

The more membership money that PCTV has, the more employees, equipment and better facilities that it can have, Avalle said.

Community Television of South Berkshire, which had been experiencing satellite difficulties that had threatened their coverage of the parade, is now on board with the telecast, thanks to a technical assist from PCTV, according to Bernard Avalle, executive director of PCTV.

Cable subscribers in portions of at least 12 states, including California, will be able see the program on their local access or community television channels.Close to two million subscribers nationally will have access to the telecast, Avalle said.
