   The Brazilian unit of UK-based HSBC will begin offering brokerage services through its 1,596 branches this June, HSBC superintendent Luis Eduardo Assis told.
   
   Referring to investment opportunities, Assis pointed to the New Market created within the Sao Paulo stock exchange, the Bovespa, which has a heavy emphasis on transparent corporate governance, as an excellent investment opportunity.
   
   HSBC is also examining privatization funds in Brazil following the pulverized sale of shares in state petroleum company Petrobras in 2000 and this year's expected sale of shares in Furnas under similar conditions. There is increasing scope for investment funds to participate in the ownership of Brazilian companies, he said.
   
   Most investors in these funds are first-time investors, he added. The results have been positive and this will continue to encourage new investors, Assis said.
   
   HSBC Brasil has US$ 10.6bn (R$21.3bn) in assets under management, and the bank expects to push this to US$ 23bn (R$50bn) by 2005
