Jim Asselin has been singing and song-writing for nearly fifteen years. As the son of two opera singers who met at a radio talent contest, (his mother won, his father took second) Jim comes naturally to song writing. He's always tapping out a tune. Unlike many songsmiths though, Jim hears all the music in his head before ever writing a lyric. Jim says that song-writing is a form of communication for him.
"I open up and express myself in ways I can't when I'm just talking. If I don't get emotional about a song, I know that I need to write more honestly."
Jim loves writing. He says, "It's easier to sing an unspoken word--when I sing, it flows right from my heart, and doesn't need to go through my head." After more than a decade of singing and playing drums on the worship team at Trinity Church in Sunnyvale, CA, Jim felt God tell him the time was right to pursue his dream of making an album, so he heeded the call.
The result: Step Out In Faith My Son. Jim's prayer is that his songs would be encouraging and challenging for Christians, but even more, he hopes this CD gets into the hands of those who would never step foot in a church--that they would feel drawn by the music and singing and want to find out more about Christ. Jim lives in Sunnyvale, California with his wife Karen and their three children: James, Ellen, and Zechariah. A carpenter by trade, Jim is a project Superintendent for a commercial construction company.
The best part of his day is coming home to three little voices yelling "Daddy!" as he walks in his front door, and then being smothered with kisses. When asked what keeps him connected to God, he says, "My inabilities-- because they help me to rely on Him."

During their prolonged journey back and forth to the repair shops and home, Jim and Karen had many hours to talk and dream and pray. God took this opportunity to confirm what Jim had felt in his heart for some time: He needed to get serious about music.
The result: They sold their house and took a three month leave from work during which Jim and his family relied on God to provide while they "stepped out in faith" to produce this CD. Jim is thankful for what seemed like endless days and nights working on their seventy-year-old house. It was the "sweat-equity" from the house that helped him to follow his dream of making this CD.
As Jim thinks back to the recording of this project, he recounts the experience of gathering talented artists from around the country to play the music he had been hearing in his head for years.
"It was amazing. All this musical and technical talent feeling what I feel.... I was like a little kid watching Steve Brewster get all over the drums. I remember biting my lip and clenching my fists with an affirmative 'YES!' It was pretty exciting for me. After the long days in the studio, I would just sit on the porch in the warm Tennessee night air, with a smile ... or a tear, and watch the fireflies--saying, "Thanks Lord!"
God is so faithful! He inspired this project from the beginning. Jim and his wife, Karen, are excited to see what happens next. Meanwhile Jim is already tapping out some tunes for his next CD ... -

Editor's note: Jim and Karen are currently serving as missionary teachers in Peru. (At least Karen is teaching. Jim is leading worship, writing songs for his next CD, and learning a lot.) God has blessed them incredibly, they say, both in preparing them for this trip, providing for their ability to go, and giving them the opportunity.
Purchasing Jim's CD will help support them, and sending them a note through the contact page will encourage them and give them a "touch of home" at the same time. Watch this space for more info on Jim and Karen.
