Mr Patterson, co-chair with French President Jacques Chirac, of the March 10 Franco/Caribbean Summit in Guadeloupe, has spoken for the region in stressing the importance that the USA also signals, like France, support for the WTO waiver.

France takes over the chairmanship of the European Commission in July from Portugal.Therefore, President Chirac's pledge in Guadeloupe for France's support for the WTO waiver is most timely and encouraging.
The Caribbean and its allies in the ACP group that constitute 85 member countries of the WTO, has left no doubt about its apprehension over the recent declaration by Panama to oppose the waiver application before the WTO.
Indeed, some Caribbean heads of government have openly questioned whether Panama, using the trade in bananas with Europe as a reason for its opposition to the waiver, may not in fact be a proxy for more powerful forces.

First Secretary of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), Ms France Asselin, officially handed over the items to Ms Denise Dias, chairperson of Help and Shelter.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ms Asselin said CIDA is pleased to have developed a partnership with Help and Shelter.The work being conducted on a daily basis at Help and Shelter Crisis Centre, through counselling and related services, has been supported by the Caribbean Gender Equity Fund, a CIDA programme.
The aim of Help and Shelter is to contribute to the reduction of domestic and sexual violence in Guyana and to provide support services for survivors of abuse.
