My friend Cathryn and I, together with her two Icelandic horses Neisti and Birtinga traveled to Couts on the Montana boarder to participate in four days of the eight-day ride.
    ...
As riders, we had the flexibility to venture out and meet cow-people (Cathryn's and my new term for cowgirls and boys) from all walks of life. My sweet little Birtinga is the most reliable of horses. She dodged all gopher holes without my help, so I had time to visit and find out what brought other members of our company to the trail.

One rider from Calgary in particular caught my interest. She was diagnosed with MS several years ago and found herself missing out on her favourite outdoor activities - hiking, mountain climbing and skiing. She fell into a deep depression over her debilitating illness and the loss in the quality of her life. This was until a friend told her about the positive affects horseback riding has for people with MS. Within months of this conversation, she took lessons and is now the proud owner of a handsome and gentle quarter horse gelding.
