   Kelsey Assarian wants no part of the comparison.
   
   The notion that she is Southwest Florida's version of University of Tennessee basketball star Candace Parker humbles Assarian and brings a smile of appreciation to her face.
   
   But the numbers and the images don't lie.
   
   Assarian has been just as productive as the 6-foot-4 Parker, a player who dominates on both ends of the floor with her size and athleticism.

   Assarian averaged 15.8 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game to earn the 2006-07 Naples Daily News Girls Basketball Player of the Year.
   
   "It's always an honor to be compared to Candace Parker," Assarian says.

   Headed to Texas A&M in 2008, Assarian may get an opportunity to play against the Lady Vols and Parker, who will be a redshirt junior next season.

   But Assarian is focused on what she has to do to get better right now and how she can help Barron Collier win another state championship.
   
   A year ago, Assarian was the team's second option as the Cougars marched toward the first-ever state basketball championship for a Southwest Florida high school.
   
   This season, Assarian stepped into her role as the team's go-to player in a big way, scoring in double figures in all but four of the 33 games. She scored at least 16 points in 17 games and had 11 double-doubles.

   "Kelsey is a tremendously talented kid," Barron Collier girs basketball coach Mike Hamburger says.

   Assarian also showed her unselfishness and her ability to make other players better, finishing third on the team with 75 assists.
   
   Hamburger says he is looking forward to seeing how Assarian develops over the summer.
   
   Her schedule will be filled with conditioning and camps, including one at Texas A&M.
   
   Assarian says she's going to use the offseason to not only prepare for her senior year at Barron Collier, but also her college career.
   
   "I want to get stronger and just work on my individual skills," she says.

   "You can't really go on that summer-league game," Barron Collier sophomore center Kelsey Assarian said. "We've improved so much since then and so have they. It does help that we've seen them before, but a lot has changed since then. We've learned so much as a team since the summer."
   
   Assarian also has first-hand knowledge about two of the Blue Devils' top players, guards Tiffany Hayes and Amber Smith.

   Sophomore girls basketball player Kelsey Assarian has started to grow into her role in the Cougars' game plans. Assarian, a 6-foot-1 post player, recorded two of her three 20-point games in her last five games. She dropped 23 in a win over Mariner on January 17 and scored 20 in a win over Lehigh on January 20.
   
   She's also been a demon on defense. She grabbed 11 rebounds against Lehigh and, in her last game against Cypress Lake, she pulled down nine rebounds and swiped four steals.
   
   Assarian leads the Cougars in rebounding and blocks, is second in points and third in steals. The Cougars begin the Class 5A District 15 tournament today at 6 p.m. against Mariner.
