Kjell Asplund is Professor of Medicine and Head of the Department of Medicine at the University Hospital in Umea, Sweden.
Dr Asplund's main research and clinical topics focused on primary and secondary prevention of stroke, pharmacokinetics in stroke, stroke care and rehabilitation, acupuncture and transcutaneous nerve stimulation in stroke rehabilitation, haemodilution for acute ischaemic stroke and diabetes in stroke patients.
Dr Asplund is or was a principle investigator in the Swedish Collaboration on Sensory Stimulation After Stroke, the WHO MONICA Study (Time trends in long-term survival after stroke: the Northern Sweden Multinational Monitoring of Trends and Determinants in Cardiovascular Disease study) and the GAIN International Trial (Glycine antagonist (gavestinel) in neuroprotection). He is further a member of the Cochrane Database System Review Committee and the Riks-Stroke Collaboration.
Dr Asplund has authored and co-authored more than 100 papers on cerebrovascular diseases and stroke in journals such as Stroke, Lancet Neurology, Cerebrovascular Diseases, European Neurology, the British Medical Journal, the Journal of Internal Medicine, and Acta Medica Scandinavica. -
