Peter Aspinall Associate Director, Open Space Research Centre
Emeritus Professor of Environmental Studies at Heriot Watt University
...
Aspinall has an MSc in psychology and a PhD in ophthalmology from Edinburgh University and has held an honorary fellowship in ophthalmology there for over 30 years. A central theme of his research has been aspects of visual function and behaviour with early research on age variation in visual fields and colour vision. He has taught visual perception, lighting and environmental psychology in the Departments of Architecture and in Landscape Architecture at Edinburgh College of Art where his research interests in visual function have continued. He has also been research director in the college before moving to the School of Built Environment at Heriot Watt University.
During the last 5 years his research interests have focused on development and work within two research centres. OPENspace is a research collaboration between CWT at Edinburgh College of Art and PAA at Heriot Watt University. VisionCentre3 is a research collaboration between PAA at Heriot Watt University, and BD at Lothian University Hospital Trust and now Heriot Watt University, RNIB, and Scottish Executive. The centre is for the benefit of visually impaired people and follows success in winning the uk prize for ophthalmology. Over this period PAA has worked on 4 EPSRC projects; the development of a self administered vision test to optimize lighting for glaucoma patients; a navigation system for visually impaired people; the IDGO consortium; and a light emitting polymer for displays at low illuminance which was selected by EPSRC and the Royal College of Engineering for its London exhibition in November 2004. Aspinall is currently Emeritus Professor of Environmental Studies at Heriot Watt University, and a Senior Research Fellow at Edinburgh College of Art.
