    Mara Aspinall
    ...
Mara Aspinall's eyes light up when she talks about hers.

The energetic 45-year-old steers the discussion back to her parent company, Genzyme Corp., whenever she can.Conversations about photography, Oreo cookie collecting (more on that later) and even ex-Massachusetts governor and current U.S. presidential candidate Mitt Romney -- a former colleague of Aspinall's -- eventually head back to the company for which she works.

"I have the privilege of working with a team that has taught me well," Aspinall said.

As president of Genzyme's genetics division in Westborough, Aspinall is now a 10-year company veteran who has played a significant part in Genzyme's (Nasdaq: GENZ) overall growth, and she is among an emerging crop of Bay State life sciences executives who have taken both civic and industry-leadership roles as the sector has rapidly expanded in Massachusetts.

Among her recent accomplishments: Aspinall was one of several executives who advised Gov.
    ...
Aspinall has huge responsibility as head of Genzyme Genetics, which employs more than 1,500 people -- or 16 percent of Genzyme's 9,500 employees -- worldwide.

The division's 300 Massachusetts employees are at the center of a booming diagnostics business that generated $140 million in sales during six months ended June 30.

The genetics segment was Genzyme's fourth largest by revenue and income through the second quarter.

But profits have been hard to come by, according to regulatory filings.Acquisition costs pushed Genzyme Genetics to a $227 million pretax loss last year, and Aspinall's division reported pretax losses of $3 million in 2005 and nearly $3.7 million in 2006.

    At the forefront

Still, Genzyme Genetics, which develops and sells genetic-based diagnostic tests, is at the forefront of personalized medicine, a concept that involves specific genetic diagnoses and customized treatments for individuals.Aspinall has become a vocal spokesperson for the nascent industry, both in speeches and in articles such as a co-written piece in the October 2007 Harvard Business Review highlighting personalized medicine's promise.

In person, Aspinall sounds like a fervent scientist who has seen the promise of something that can truly change medicine. She encourages her management team to meet with physicians and hospitals -- an idea she picked up during board/volunteer work for the American Cancer Society -- to see how Genzyme's products are being used.

Traditional medicine is evolving, Aspinall explained.Historically, health care providers have used a trial-and-error approach to therapy, using observation to prescribe a therapy, observing a patient's response, and changing or tweaking the therapy as needed. But the days of trial-and-error are gradually giving way to a more progressive approach, combining clinical evaluation and quantitative testing to improve the standard of care.

The future, Aspinall said, is about predictive genetic testing.
