Rockport can make another outstanding claim; it's been the lifelong hometown of SCV resident and travel director Bob Aspesi.

Bob was born, raised and educated in the Pigeon Cove section of Rockport which is located on Cape Ann in Massachusetts. He began his career at the age 15 working in a Finast grocery store after school. After completing high school, he enlisted in the Navy. When he returned to civilian life, he continued working in the Finast, where he soon became manager. For the next 10 years, he assisted in the opening of other Finast grocery stores in and around the Boston area. In 1960, he was promoted to superintendent, overseeing approximately 16 stores north of Boston. He continued up the ranks to supervisor, zone manager and assistant operations manager for the Boston division, with about 100 stores under his management. In 1980, the Finast grocery chain was bought out and ironically, Bob had to reverse the procedure and help close the stores that he had helped to open.

In 1984, after suffering a heart attack, Bob took an early retirement. He became active in the American Legion where he was involved with veterans affairs, advancing to the position of district commander in the Department of Massachusetts Executive Committee. Bob, being civic-minded, was active in the Elks, Knights of Columbus and served on various committees for the city of Rockport.

He and his wife, Dot, have been married for 48 years; they have two sons and four grandchildren. They purchased their home here in Spring Creek Village in 1990. For the last eight years, they have diligently served in the capacity as our village tour directors. Bob and Dot do all the logistics in preparation for tours.

Bob was a self-employed mason contractor, constructing fireplaces, homes and businesses. After coming to Florida in 1981, he was a superintendent for Stillson Co. in Port Charlotte. Bob was hired to build an addition to the offices of the Retina Consultants in Fort Myers, who appreciated him and the good work he did to the extent that they employed him on a continual basis to maintain their offices. Bob and his wife Jean have seven children.

Actually, I'm waiting for SCV travel director Bob Aspesi to compose some information about the cruise, so in the meantime, here are some comparisons of the two vessels.

The Mayflower dates back to around 1616. The Amsterdam was built in 2000, is 780 feet long and 105 feet wide with a capacity for 1,316 passengers and 658 crew members. The Mayflower was 90 feet long and 26 feet wide with 102 passengers and 30 crew members. It did not have private cabins, beds or running water. They used curtains to create privacy and slept on wooden pallets, hammocks or the floor. Aboard the Mayflower, one person died and one baby was born. Aboard the Amsterdam, passengers enjoyed all the luxuries of a first class hotel and about 60 of them got sick.
    ...
Here's the rest of the story titled "We Are The Survivors" in the words of Bob Aspesi: "The cruise aboard the M.S. Amsterdam was a huge success, even though there was a virus aboard the ship. Only a very small percentage of passengers contacted the virus along with some crew members. The Tommy Dorsey band played daily featuring Buddy Morrow for dancing to all the old time tunes. Many evenings they played on the Lido Deck under the stars. The food was exceptional, and the Las Vegas-type shows were outstanding. The ports of call, such as Curacao, Trinidad, Martinique, St. Johns and others, were excellent, but the day we spent at Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas (Holland America's own island) was the highlight of the trip. The beach, the beautiful water and the barbecue left nothing to be desired.
