   Asperger was born and raised within earshot of the steel mills of Youngstown, Ohio, by hard-working parents, who emigrated from Croatia. He graduated from Kent State with a B.A. degree in 1950, and was quickly appointed vice president of the Ohio chapter of the Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1954. Affable and outgoing, he combined his love of people with his knowledge of steel to forge a successful 40-year career as a salesman for steel fabricating companies. In 1973, Asperger became a principal of New-Fab Inc. of Newton Falls, Ohio, and continued to manage the company until his retirement in 1987. In the early 1970s, Asperger became an instructor of Dale Carnegie courses, and over the next twenty years helped hundreds of adult students in classes throughout Northeastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania improve their communications skills and overcome their fear of public speaking. Devoted to his family as well as his career, Asperger served as a member of the Liberty High School Board of Education, as president of the Booster Club and as the press box announcer at football games.
