Balloons Unlimited was formed in 1978 by Pete Asp with a partner. It flew it's first fare-paying passengers in 1979. It was incorporated in 1982 as Balloons Unlimited of Wisconsin, Inc. In 1985, Pete assumed full ownership of the corporation.
A balloon repair station was added in 1984. In 1989, operations were moved to Sullivan.

"What we're going to have is, on one day, each balloon will have a bean bag and there is going to be a big white ‘X' on the grounds. They (the balloons) are each going to launch and drop their bag as close to the ‘X' as pos-sible, and they will win points for that. So, you get on Saturday the spectacle of 25 balloons coming into the grounds. On Sunday, we'll have a big ascension."
