   Asmerom Elected Head Monitor at Taft School
   
   Tarik will be in charge of organizing a wide range of student activities ; she will act as a liaison between the students and faculty, meeting weekly with Headmaster Lance Odden to discuss issues, concerns, and events at Taft ; she will be part of the School's Disciplinary Committee. A leader of United Cultures at Taft (UCT), a member of NAALSA, an editor for the International Forum, a contributor to the Papyrus, and former class committee chair, Tarik clearly brings leadership experience to her new post. Only the fourth girl elected head monitor and the second student of color-she is the first to be both. I think her winning has lightened some of the cynicism that one has to be white or male to succeed here, says History teacher, Lenny Tucker (93), and that be a good thing for Taft. Tarik hopes to pick up where this year's school monitors left off. According to Tarik, there be some work that still has to be done. She hopes to implement some of the ideas that that this year's monitors focused upon : spending more time with lower schoolers, explaining how the school works and why the honor code are so important.
   
   Prior to her arrival in the fall of 1997, Tarik had never known anyone who'd gone to boarding school. But she adapted quickly and made her mark early as a leader at Taft.
   
   i be excited to have so many responsibilities but kind of nervous about the speeches i will have to give. Now that i have been made head monitor, she says with excitement, I feel like I can do anything.
   
   Headmaster Lance Odden says of Tarik : In her three years at Taft, Tarik has earned the community's deepest respect for her integrity, hard work, and leadership. Her overwhelming election as head Monitor served as a testimony to the high regard we all have for her, and I especially look forward to working with her next year..
   
   Tarik is the daughter of Mrs. Elsa Tedla of Houston, TX, and Mr. Tesfay Asmerom of Bellaire, TX.
