Congratulations to TAMARA EDMONDS ASKEW, Project Manager of the ABA's Commission on Women, who will oversee the local research of the ABA's study on women of color (African-American, Asian, Hispanic, and Native American) in the legal profession.Beginning in September, the ABA intends to poll 7000 women through the use of surveys and focus groups to collect research data. While women have made considerable progress in gaining entry to and achieving success across the board in the legal profession, the success has not been shared among women attorneys of color. The focus groups will discuss: (1) What attracts women of color to the legal profession; (2) Do their experiences surpass or fall short of expectations; (3) Why do women attorneys of color change organizations or leave the profession. In addition, interviews will be conducted of hiring professionals from law firms, corporations, governmental entities, and other legal employers to assess some of the barriers to retention and advancement. If you have any questions or would like to participate with the study, contact Tamara Askew at (312) 988-5676 or e-mail her at: askewt@staff.abanet.org .
