"In the last two days (of May), we got nearly half of the monthly total of rain," said Mark Askelson of UND's research and atmospheric sciences department.
Grand Forks had 5.73 inches of rain in May, breaking the 1999 record precipitation of 5.01 inches.
The rain is part of a trend, according to Askelson, but not a predictable one. "Strange weather is sort of the norm here," said Askelson. "It is my understanding that across the plains, wet and dry cycles have been the norm. We have no definite answer for why wet and dry cycles occur."
He said that although there are some theories that relate precipitation levels to different oscillations around the world, both atmospheric and in the ocean, there really is no strong correlation between these and the wet/dry cycles experienced in the plains.
"One of the things that really influences the rain are the large-scale low pressure systems that come through," Askelson said.
