DETROIT -- Margaret Crutchfield Ashworth believed that the quality of a person's life could be shaped by the quality of his or her education. Over a distinguished teaching career of more than 40 years , from elementary classrooms to the college level , Mrs. Ashworth influenced countless young people. Mrs. Ashworth , 83 , died from heart failure on Tuesday , Oct. 30 , 2001 , in Detroit's Harper Hospital after a long illness.

Mrs. Ashworth began her career in Detroit with the public schools in 1950 , teaching at Pattengill , Biddle , Duffield elementary schools and at Webber Junior High. She joined Wayne State University's School of Education faculty in 1968 , and was at the forefront of a number of African-American issues of her time. She established the Afro-American curriculum at Wayne State and directed the university's teacher corps program. She was executive director of the Afro-American Museum in 1973. Wayne State honored her with an award and by establishing the Margaret Ashworth Scholarship Fund. Mrs. Ashworth also received scores of awards from community organizations and civic groups. Away from work , Mrs. Ashworth was an accomplished gardener and cook and enjoyed opening her home to entertain friends and relatives. In addition to her daughter , she is survived by her husband of 60 years , Grady ; sons William and Dale ; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Visitation is from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the James H. Cole Funeral Home , 2624 W. Grand Blvd. , Detroit. A family hour begins 10 a.m. Monday in the Church of Christ of Conant Gardens , 18460 Conant , Detroit , followed by a funeral service. Interment will be at Elmwood Cemetery , Detroit. -
