"We are finding that more and more students are enrolling into our courses rather than paying huge fees to go to university and then finding that they can't get a job because they are not sufficiently skilled on a technical level and are not job ready," says EXCOM EXpress IT National Manager, Cassandra Ashworth."We actually have a number of students who have already obtained university undergraduate and masters degrees, and who have enrolled in our program just to get up to the IT skill level that employers are demanding.More students are also coming into the program straight from high school because of the same reasons and because the cost of doing a program like ours is substantially cheaper than going to university and spending upwards of $50,000."

Ms Ashworth says universities and other tertiary programs are simply not meeting the needs of employers in teaching their IT students the knowledge and hands-on skills required to get a job.By comparison, EXCOM's Express IT program guarantees job placement for all students on completion, and often students are offered positions before they have completed the program.

"The reality is that the information technology marketplace is continuing to expand rapidly in line with the Australian economy, and the demand for skilled professionals in the IT area is exceeding available supply," said EXCOM's EXpress IT National Manager, Cassandra Ashworth.
    ...
"The Australian IT sector over the next few years is going to be facing problems until educational institutes start fuelling the fire with enough appropriately skilled new entrants into the industry," Ms Ashworth said."There are major skill shortages in specialised fields. Those roles require experience that we just don't have enough of across Australia today, and aren't doing enough to prepare for future demands."

Reflecting the ongoing corporate demand for qualified IT professionals, EXCOM has had no problem in being able to place 100 per cent of its Express IT program graduates.

"Every person that has been through our program, which provides training in key IT platforms such as Microsoft and Novell, has been placed into a job on completion, and in many cases graduates are allocated for positions well before they have finished," Ms Ashworth said."The latest industry figures show that employment in the Australian technology sector is rising strongly and is close to a record high," Ms Ashworth said.

"The upcoming open day offers people the opportunity to discover more about this ever changing industry and how they can be working in IT within as little as four months.By speaking to past graduates, listening to experts in the field and understanding how our Career Advisors can help you get into IT, the open day lets you experience what the IT industry is really like" said Ms Ashworth.

"The classic image of an IT geek is no longer relevant as the industry offers so much more than just helpdesk/call centre work. There are opportunities for people to become involved with creating new technologies, working their way up to managerial roles or even starting their own firms. There is more to IT than meets the eye," said Ms Ashworth.

"There are major skill shortages in specilased fields; these roles require experience that we just don't have enough off across Australia today and aren't doing enough to prepare for future demands" Ashworth states.

EXCOM's EXpress IT Program produces trained and certified graduates through hands on technical training and experience, creating ideal candidates for entry level positions, including Help Desk support, network administration and PC support.

Ms Ashworth said the program had a 100 per cent job placement rate nationally with an average placement time of just over three weeks.EXCOM is really bridging the gap as they guarantee its Express IT graduates an IT job with four months of completing the intensive, and quick, training program.

"We recognise the "catch-22" situation the majority of graduates face , how do I get my first job when employers want me to have IT experience, so how do I get IT experience when I cant get my first job.We get their first job for them, and bridge that gap", states Koukounaras

According to Ms Ashworth, the Australian Technology industry is "on the up" again and has been gathering momentum due to a healthy Australian economy.

Cassandra Ashworth, National Manager for the EXpress IT program at EXCOM, explains the difference.

"Some industries need to re-think the way in which qualifications and experience are gained prior to employment," said Ms Ashworth.
    ...
Ashworth says that the EXpress IT program at EXCOM Education is the complete solution.

"We have up to 30% of IT graduates from TAFE's or Universities completing our EXpress IT program, simply because on finishing their degree or diploma, they found a shortfall in the skill set needed to find employment," she said.

"Traditional tertiary learning institutes need to revise what they include on their curriculum, and how the learning is applied to the industry, because certainly with IT, there is a gap between education and employment.

Ashworth explains that the major benefit of courses such as EXCOM's EXpress IT Program is in the training method.

"Our training approach is to instruct the curriculum like a trade; giving students an actual working knowledge of the industry, a realistic insight into what will be their day to day tasks and requirements, and the hands-on, practical experience found lacking in traditional academia," said Ms Ashworth.

Best of all, EXpress IT graduates are guaranteed a job in IT within four months!
    ...
"Where they make up in introducing the practical side of the industry, the lack in researching the most sought after skills," said Ms Ashworth.

According to EXCOM Education's national Express IT manager Cassandra Ashworth, the Australian technology industry is "on the up" again and has been gathering speed due to a healthy Australian economy.
    ...
Ms Ashworth said the Australian Information Industry Association had said that businesses next year would be looking for more than 30,000 people to employ in IT roles.

"IT spending is also predicted to increase next year and overall network employment in IT was up 16 per cent last quarter," Ms Ashworth said.

"It's a tremendously good time to be entering what is a fast-paced industry with loads of opportunities."

Reflecting the fast pace of the IT industry, EXCOM designed the Express IT Training and Job Placement Program five years ago with the intention of providing competent, job-ready graduates within a short time.

Ms Ashworth said that EXCOM extensively surveyed employers in the industry to find out what skills they were looking for in entry-level IT positions.

"These vendor certifications are recognised as a mark of expertise and proof of product knowledge and skills," Ms Ashworth said.
