John Ashurst - T3 Instructor "Middle Grades Math Using the TI-83 Plus/TI-84 Plus" John Ashurst is a Mathematics Specialist for the Harlan County Public Schools in Harlan, Kentucky. In this capacity, he models alternative teaching methods and coordinates mathematics curriculum for the district. He received his MA (1975) from the University of Kentucky and BS (1972) from Cumberland College. His most recent graduate work was at Appalachian State University. John is currently the Secondary Vice-President of the Kentucky Council of Teachers of Mathematics and regularly contributes brief articles to the KCTM online newsletter, http://www.kctm.org/newsletter.htm. He was a 1996 recipient of The Golden Apple Achiever Award, presented by Ashland Oil. In 2001, he was awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award by Campbellsville University. However, his biggest award is in seeing a student regain mathematical confidence. For John, the counterbalance to work comes in the form of backpacking, camping, Carolina Shag, and family trips to North Myrtle Beach. When asked to teach a night class at a local college some years ago, John was heard to regretfully reply, "I'm sorry, but I can't read in the dark!" -
