Agorá welcomes Mr Colin Ashurst, a member of Durham Business School faculty and Senior Teaching Fellow in MIS to the Southern Agorá event schedule .

Organisational success - indeed organisational survival - depends on an ability to adapt and transform. Organisations of all sizes and across all sectors face huge challenges improving productivity and delivering valuable new products and services to customers. In virtually every scenario, exploiting the continuing innovation in information and communication technologies (IS/IT) is a critical component of any business transformation programme.

Colin Ashurst, explores the causes of business transformation and IS project failure, highlighting factors linked to leadership, cultural change, technological delivery. Based on recent research he will then suggest a way forward for organisations that want to succeed with business transformation and realising the strategic potential of IS.

Most recently Colin has worked as a Strategy Consultant with Microsoft for 5 years working with a wide range of organisations in the public and private sectors. Engagements covered many scenarios including ecommerce, knowledge management and project management processes. He also led the Microsoft UK input to the Cranfield Information Systems Research Centre for 5 years and was involved in a number of research projects.

Colin completed his MBA in 1997. He is a member of the British Computer Society and Chartered IT Professional and a member of the Association of Project Management.

Les Graham and Colin Ashurst both contributed considerably to the second FME Fellows' Day recently held at Durham Business School - without them and their organisation the event would not have been so successful.

Colin Ashurst, FME Teaching Fellow, University of Durham Business School

Colin has now successfully completed his two year term as an FME Fellow, having previously worked in technical and managerial roles in Microsoft. His drive to gain more visibility for the use of business information systems, as a means of adding value to productivity, was behind the decision to make the career change from industry into academia and the FME Teaching Fellowship Scheme has provided the perfect platform.

Since his time at Durham, Colin has made a number of important contributions to the school, one of the most significant was his initiating and leading a series of Teaching and Learning Seminars, which have been running for over a year and have stimulated much reflection and innovation on teaching programmes at Durham - he deserves credit for this initiative. (Sept 06)

Colin was awarded his Phd September 2007 well done.
