"It's good in that it allows us to still run a business without gouging our clients," said Adam Ashurst, a member of the North Shore Dog Walkers' Alliance."We're grateful councillors took the time to inform themselves on this topic ... before tightening the belt too far."Professional dog walkers, their clients and supporters showed up at both Districts of North and West Vancouver Monday night to oppose new regulations that would restrict the number of unleashed dogs they could walk at one time and require them to pay park user fees. Both municipalities cited environmental and safety concerns as the reason for new restrictions. North Vancouver council changed the proposed bylaw however, to allow dog walkers six dogs at a time, the number of off leash dogs at the walker's discretion. A limit on commercial dog-walking hours between 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday was also changed to include weekends for two on-leash dogs. "There's a lot of our clients who work for the fire department or the movie industry that don't work Monday through Friday," Ashurst explained."Amending it to two dogs on leash in these other hours is a step in the right direction."Starting July 1, commercial dog walkers will also be required to pay between $600 and $1,000 per year in park user fees, if the bylaw passes. Ashurst said his group doesn't oppose paying park fees, but they feel the proposed dollar amount is too high for most businesses' earning potential.
