3. Space shortage at New Lenox bus center

NEW LENOX - While most people are just crawling out of bed, Ronna Ashum and her crew of 62 school bus drivers are back on the job, inspecting their fleet before heading out for the day.
They file in and out of the transportation center on Industry Road, checking assignments and making sure there aren't any last-minute changes to their routes.
"This (place) is a bevy of activity all day long," said Ashum, transportation director for the New Lenox Grade School District. "People are in and out, in and out."
When space becomes tight in the 1,628-square-foot transportation center (a former machine shop that the district bought about eight years ago), the drivers are forced to head to their buses to finish drinking their morning coffee.
"We've outgrown our space," said Ashum, who uses the district's adjoining warehouse for staff and safety meetings.
She simply has the equipment used to lift heavy boxes of paper and janitorial supplies moved to other parts of the room so her crew can gather in the center and talk.
Knowing the cramped conditions are only going to get worse as the district continues to add buses and drivers to its fleet each year to accommodate the growing student population, Ashum hopes to acquire a portion of the adjoining warehouse full time.
"We need more space for people," said Ashum, who hires about three additional drivers each year for the new buses.
She hopes to use the warehouse as a place for the drivers to gather each day between routes.
They currently use a small room at the front of the building that is furnished with three lunch tables and about 14 chairs.
Some drivers avoid the chaos by taking their buses home between routes or meeting up somewhere in town for lunch, Ashum said.
...
After that, Ashum hopes the district will find the money to enlarge the transportation center to 3,415 square feet by converting part of the adjoining warehouse into a heated and air-conditioned room for drivers.
"The drivers work really hard," Ashum said.
