Leslie Ashton , a regional vice president of Van Kampen Funds , presented a seminar titled Smart Women Finish Rich to local business women during a luncheon held at Kokopelli Park May 2.

Ashton told the audience that women have out performed male investors nine out of the last 12 years and that women now own 9.2 million businesses in the U.S.. She also said that 46 percent of households with assets greater than $600 , 000 are headed by women.
The news wasn't all good , however. Since women live an average of seven years longer than men , the average age of widowhood is 56 years and 25 percent of widows go through their husband's death benefits in two months. In addition , 27 percent of marriages in Utah end in divorce. Women are out of the labor force an average of 11.5 years for child bearing and rearing , making it difficult for them to earn a liveable income when death or divorce strike. The most distressing statistic given by Ashton is that 91 percent of women over the age of 80 , which is currently the fastest growing segment of the population , live in poverty.
Ashton's advice is learn to earn.. She suggested reading at least two investment books per year as well as investment journals and newspapers. She also advised women to make wise rather than risky investments with the advice of experts. Ashton said the investments don't have to be large for women to gain financial security , but should be constant.
