2. Global Business Magazine - Export Today - September 1999 - Air Cargo

Les Ashton , manager of cargo procedures for the International Air Transport Association ( IATA ) , says the goal for Cargo 2000 is really quite simple -- to create a set of digital standards in the same tradition that led to uniform air waybill forms , barcode labeling and standard message forms. Now , he says , we must standardize the electronic systems that use these tools..
For shippers , the basics of booking air cargo space two years from now will seem much the same as now. With rare exceptions , customers will still be expected to link up first with their forwarders , not with the airlines or alliances directly. However , the services that the forwarders will be able to sell to the shippers should be considerably more useful and efficient than they are today.
Integrator Economics. One of the main impetuses for the airlines and forwarders in developing Cargo 2000 was the desire to compete more effectively with the integrators , especially FedEx and UPS. -
