"Working in the courtyard gives them hands-on experience, and some of them get to do things that they've not been able to do before," teacher Kelly Ashton said."It gives them a little exposure to different areas of science, and since they take care of the courtyard, it gives them ownership of it.They do a lot of the work on it themselves, and they take pride in it."
Ashton believes learning outside instead of in a classroom attracts students to the class.But once in the class, students find there's so much to learn.
"They get to learn a little bit."Ashton said."They get to be out in the fresh air."
Students in the junior high can continue in environmental studies once they reach high school.
