"Osteoarthritis is a disease of the joints resulting from slowly progressive degenerative disease and breakdown of the cartilage, resulting in inflammation pain, tenderness, stiffness and physical disability," he explained.
"It is the second health problem facing older people after cardiovascular diseases.
"The most common joints to be affected are the knee and hip with the hand, wrist and shoulder being less commonly affected.
