Our Friday featured keynote speaker will be Jon Ashmann who gave a captivating presentation on "Design in Nature" at the 2003 NAEA Spring Conference in Minneapolis.Jon Ashmann has taught in the Visual Communication Program at Northern Illinois University for the past 19 years.Prior to teaching at Northern he was an instructor for five years at the Illinois institute of Technology, Institute of Design.In addition, he has been an adjunct professor and visiting designer at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago over a period of 20 years.He has received international recognition for his design, having worked for over 40 Chicago and national companies.In 1995 he was honored with recognition for excellence in teaching at Northern Illinois University.In 1999 he received the "Above and Beyond Award" from the American Institute of Graphic Arts Chicago Chapter for advocacy for design and contributions on the board and education committee.Jon Ashmann has given numerous lectures across the United States at conferences and invited events.He has lectured in Europe, Africa, Asia, North America and the South Pacific.
As a frequent guest at the Academia di Comunicazione in Milan, Italy, he has conducted many lectures and workshops there over the past 10 years.In addition, he has directed short-term study programs in England, France, Spain, Switzerland and Italy.In March of 2002 he was invited to exhibit a one-person show at the Silpakorn University Gallery in Bangkok, Thailand.This show, titled "Second Chance," featured 50 drawings illustrating his experience with a life threatening illness.
He is a member of the National Art Education Association, Illinois Art Education, Foundations in Art: Theory and Education, past vice president of the British Columbia Art Teachers Association and past board member and education chair of the American Institute of Graphics Arts Chicago Chapter.As an advocate for the protection and preservation of the natural environment, Jon Ashmann has given many lectures on Prairie preservation and restoration at Nachusa Grasslands in northwest Illinois over the past 12 years.
