"Our programming has been a little more selective in targeting specific audiences we know will come to Heritage Hill," said Debbie Ashmann, site supervisor.

Organizers have created events in an effort to attract families to the park, she said, as well as bring in added participation for educational activities.

"We've been the leader in programs for schools since we've opened," Ashmann said."That's one area where we've been really strong."

That includes more events for home-schooled participants, she said.

    Name: Debbie Ashmann

    ...
Debbie Ashmann remembers watching Tank cottage and the hospital as they were floated by barge along the Fox River, on the way to their new sites at Heritage Hill State Historical Park when it was taking shape in the early 1970s.

Little did the 1973 Green Bay West High School graduate know that, nearly 30 years later, she'd be Heritage Hill's director of interpretation and would help make Green Bay history come to life.

In her role as director of interpretation, Ashmann oversees the staff of seasonal employees who, through story-telling and historic time period acting, teach history to the more than 35,000 visitors who annually come to Heritage Hill.

When the park is open, Ashmann is in charge of the daily activities that involve the interpreters, including food preparation, costuming and special events.

My training: Ashmann credited her experience as a volunteer, organizing activities for her church and community, with preparing her for her work at Heritage Hill.

She also said learning by experience has helped her do her job."I have grown through the program at Heritage Hill. The other staff members have helped me along. We all work as a team," Ashmann said."I have taken some classes and am taking a class in management now. That, and my love of history, have helped."

What led me to the job: "I started working here as a fluke.I was looking for a part-time job and I saw an ad for interpreters and applied," Ashmann said. That was in 1998 and Ashmann started as an interpreter at the park's farm. She "did a little cooking, sewing, gardening and just played."

The next year, Ashmann joined the 11-person permanent staff as director of interpretation.

Workday inspirations: Ashmann said her staff of seasonal interpreters are her inspiration."I have a fantastic staff. They're all so willing to help do anything. They inspire me.Our core group of staff members are wonderful, too.We really are a team and work well together."

Green Bay Press-Gazette - Tom Perry column: Christmas... - [Cached Version]
Published on: 12/2/2003    Last Visited: 12/2/2003

Debbie Ashmann has read the comments of people yearning for old-fashioned holidays.

She has seen newspaper articles."Christmas is too commercialized," writers have declared.

The thing is, these articles were written back in the 1870s and '80s, Ashmann said.

If anyone in the Green Bay area is familiar with the ghost of Christmas past, it would be Ashmann.

    A different twist

As director of interpretation at the Heritage Hill State Historical Park, she is working on the park's annual holiday event.

This year, Heritage Hill is trying something different, Ashmann said Monday.

Rather than simply staying open for tours, the park will have more emphasis on activities, especially with children.

"We wanted to relive something of the past with activities that families would have done at that time," she said.
    ...
Indeed, by the 1880s, "you could get all kinds of commercial things" here, because of the railroad, Ashmann said.
