   "The suburbs simply aren't friendly," said Sheila Ashley, who is an operations specialist for the federal government.
   
   Ashley, along with her husband, Larry, a quality assurance specialist, are raising two teenagers, Kori, 15, and Kyle, 18, on the city's northwest side.
   
   "I didn't want my children affected by some of the unspoken messages that I receive when I shop in the suburbs," she said. "People who live in the suburbs ascribe to you all of the negative behaviors and stereotypical characterizations of African-Americans that they see on television or read in the newspaper. Why put yourself through that?"
   
   Other African-Americans, who once lived in the suburbs, have moved back closer to the city.
