   The Long Beach Unified School District conducts background checks on the applicants it selects to interview, said Ruth Ashley, LBUSD assistant superintendent of human resource services.
   
   The district receives reports from local law enforcement and the California Department of Justice on arrests and convictions of employees, she said.
   
   If the district receives a report of sexual misconduct, it is obligated to inform the police and it begins conducting its own investigation while the teacher is placed on leave, she said.
   
   When making hiring decisions, a conviction in general will not necessarily exclude someone from getting the job, depending on the conviction's relevance to the teaching position, she said.
   
   "There has to be a direct nexus ... between what the charge is and their work in the classroom," she said.
   
   But sexual or drug-related offenses can result in automatic disqualification, she said.
   
   Sexual misconduct investigations are very rare in LBUSD, Ashley said.
