Ruby Ashley is the Outreach Coordinator for the Georgia Southern University Museum, an accredited institution with the American Association of Museums.Ms. Ashley is responsible for two major programs, Project SENSE and Science and Math in the Outdoor Classroom (SMOC).Project SENSE, Science Education Network for the Southeast, has touched the lives of over 42,000 students since its inception in 1989 with the philosophy of "hands-on, minds-on science."Hands-on science implies that the students are active participants in the learning, not passive listeners.Minds-on demands that the students reflect, discuss, and make sense of their learning.SMOC assists teachers in utilizing the outdoor classroom as a laboratory for students to conduct research, analyze data, and present results. Each program offers summer workshops training teachers in content and pedagogy, and provides kits complete with equipment, consumables, and lesson plans delivered directly to the classrooms throughout the school year.
Ruby has been working in the science education field for ten years and strives to keep the program, its standards, and activities current with the field.Ruby has worked to make the museum's science outreach programs visible across the state of Georgia and the nation through annual presentations at the Georgia Science Teachers Association and the Georgia Independent Schools Association conferences, as well as presentations to major national museum and education associations. She works with GYSTC (Georgia Youth Science & Technology Centers, Inc.) coordinators and various other science leaders in addition to regularly presenting programming in classrooms to keep the outreach programs on the cutting edge of science activity in Georgia.
