   Markham Police and Fire Commission Chairman Roland Ray Ashley made the comments during a recess in the disciplinary hearing of officers Courtney Howell-White, Max Evans, Nicole Wilkin and DeShaun Walker.

   On Tuesday, as the hearing entered its third month, Ashley repeatedly refused to consider evidence suggesting Police Chief Pascal Crawford -- who brought the charges -- had a longstanding personal vendetta against Howell-White.

   As chairman of Markham's Police and Fire Commission, Roland Ray Ashley boasted that he could hire and fire officers as he pleased.
   
   Now it is the disgraced Ashley who faces the ax.

   Ashley's fate has been hanging in the balance since Sunday, when the Daily Southtown published details of taped conversations in which he offered to help officer Courtney Howell-White cheat on a police test, suggested she sleep with the mayor and boasted that corrupt "humbugging and scheming" was his hobby.
   
   After listening to the tapes Monday, Webb said he would "probably" move to dismiss Ashley, but he wanted to take legal advice.
   
   Speaking Tuesday, he said, "I'm going to meet with the commissioner tomorrow and ask him to resign.
   
   "If he doesn't, I'll take further action," confirming that meant he would move to dismiss Ashley.

   Ashley presided over the hearing, which is expected to lead to the termination of Howell-White and two other officers for allegedly breaking a long-unenforced residency rule.
   
   Ashley was due to issue a written ruling by March 15.
   
   During the hearing, Ashley repeatedly refused to hear evidence of a plot to remove Howell-White by any means necessary.
   
   But on the tapes, he acknowledged the existence of just such a plot, saying the mayor wanted to "f--- her up anyway (he) can," and that the police chief wanted "some way for us to help him fire" Howell-White.
