Mr. Robert A. Ashley - President and Chief Operating Officer Mr. Ashley's career in the pharmaceutical industry extends over 26 years, and encompasses both large and small companies. Mr. Ashley is currently Chief Executive Officer of a pharmaceutical development and consulting company, Ashley BioPharm LLC. Prior to this, Mr. Ashley was Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of AmpliMed Corporation, a privately-owned cancer drug development company with a lead product, Amplimexon® (imexon inj.) in Phase II clinical development. AmpliMed was founded in 1989 by a group of researchers from the Arizona Cancer Center and Mr. Ashley joined the company in January 2004. During his tenure, the company raised a total of $24MM in several rounds of venture capital financing, and grew from 6 to 19 employees. Its lead drug, Amplimexon, was administered to more than 200 patients in six Phase I and II clinical trials, and promising clinical data were obtained in several potential indications. AmpliMed also in-licensed and developed technology from the University of Arizona and sponsored several research programs which were carried out in laboratories at the Arizona Cancer Center.
Prior to Amplimed, Mr. Ashley joined CollaGenex Pharmaceuticals Inc. (a venture-backed start-up company) as its second full-time employee, and served as Senior Vice President of Commercial Development as the company grew into a profitable, publicly-traded specialty pharmaceutical company with 160 employees and sales in excess of $50 million. His responsibilities during this period included research, development, regulatory, clinical, manufacturing, business development, licensing and intellectual property, along with the development of CollaGenex' business outside the United States. He was responsible for guiding CollaGenex' lead product Periostat® through the clinical development and regulatory process, and also for the successful relationship between the company and the National Cancer Institute for the development of the cancer drug, Metastat®. He is the author of several scientific papers and is the inventor of several issued and pending patents. Mr. Ashley also served Squibb Corporation as Commercial Development Manager in the Diagnostics Division, and held several marketing and business development positions of increasing responsibility within Bristol-Myers Squibb, being responsible for launching new contrast agents in various radiological specialties with a primary emphasis on improved cancer diagnosis. In addition, Mr. Ashley served in manufacturing, development and marketing roles at Amersham International plc, where he was responsible for the launch of several new radiopharmaceutical products and was Amersham's UK Sales Manager. Mr. Ashley holds a Masters Degree in Biochemistry from Oxford University. -
