But Maurice Ashley may be about to change that. The 33-year-old Brooklynite recently made history when he became the first Black international chess grandmaster.
...
Ashley is one of about 45 active grandmasters in this country and 470 internationally.
Ashley, who directs the chess program at the non-profit Harlem Educational Activities Fund (HEAF), started playing at 14, when a classmate challenged him.
...
But when Ashley started playing competitively, he "could count the number of Black faces on one hand."He persevered with the support of the Black Bear School of Chess, a group of Black chess players who competed in Brooklyn's Prospect Park."I learned a lot from them as men because I didn't have a father at home," Ashley recalls."I also learned a lot of chess."
Now the grandmaster's sharing what he learned with the mostly Black and Latino kids who attend HEAF's after-school programs. And this fall, Ashley plans to get more kids hooked on rooks and pawns when HEAF opens its Harlem Chess Center."Hopefully it will be a start for chess," Ashley says, "not just in the Harlem community, but in many neighborhoods in the city and then around the country."
