    LOS ANGELES-- ( BUSINESS WIRE ) --July 2 , 2001--Manufacturers Bank today announced that it has appointed John Ashkar to the post of vice president and international marketing officer in the International Services Department. Ashkar will be responsible for growing the bank's international trade finance business. He will provide international marketing support to line units by generating sales leads , participating in international marketing calls , assisting line officers with trade finance credits structure and conducting training on international products. John has over 20 years' trade finance and commercial lending experience with major banks in California , said Jenny Wu , senior vice president and manager of the International Service Department.

    Prior to joining Manufacturers Bank in March 2001 , Ashkar spent a year at East West Bank as vice president and manager of the Los Angeles office. In this capacity , he was responsible for the overall management of the Los Angeles retail/commercial branch , as well as the marketing , negotiating and underwriting of commercial and trade finance credits. Before that , Ashkar spent six years at Sanwa Bank as vice president , commercial banking center , where he negotiated , structured and booked new commercial credit relationships with commitments between $3 million and $20 million. Ashkar also spent seven years at Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corp. , first as assistant vice president and lending officer , and later as assistant vice president and manager of the Irvine office. Earlier in his career , he worked for five years at Saudi American Bank , a joint venture between Citibank and Saudi shareholders. Ashkar earned a bachelor's degree in business administration , with an emphasis in banking and corporate finance , from the University of Southern California. He has attended Citibank's Management Training Program in Athens , Greece , and Immediate Credit Training Session in Istanbul , Turkey.
