Mr. Keyoumars Ashkan is the second neurosurgeon on the DBS team. He was appointed as a Senior Lecturer in Functional Neurosurgery at the Institute of Neurology and Consultant Neurosurgeon at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in July 2004.
He qualified from the University of Wales College of Medicine in 1993 with commendations in medicine and surgery as well as a first class honours degree in medical biochemistry. He underwent dual postgraduate training in both surgery and medicine, including neurology, at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Hammersmith Hospital , Royal Brompton Hospital , Southampton and Leicester General Hospitals obtaining Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) in 1997 and the Fellowships of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Glasgow (FRCS) in 1998. Thereafter, he underwent higher specialist training in neurosurgery at the National, Atkinson Morley's, Kings, Charing Cross , Great Ormond Street and Princess Royal Hospitals , being awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Neurosurgery (FRCS SN) in 2002. During this period he received training in stereotactic neurosurgery and DBS from Prof. M. Hariz, Prof. T. Aziz and Prof. D. Thomas.
In 2003, Mr. Ashkan spent a year working with Prof. A.L. Benabid in Grenoble , France where he was further trained in the technique of DBS as well as carrying out research on the methodological aspects of DBS and the issues related to the question of post DBS neuroprotection.
He has over 50 publications including 30 papers in peer-reviewed journals. -
