"We do this ourselves by donating a number of items and then cover the shoe boxes with Christmas paper or brightly- coloured paper," Lioness Club president Susan Ashford said. "As an organisation, we normally concentrate on local charities but once a year we do this for Operation Christmas Child and it's the biggest one we support outside the town area." Operation Christmas Child is co-ordinated by Samaritan's Purse, an international relief organisation trying to provide cheer and a message of hope during the festive season for children living in poverty or desperate situations worldwide. Mrs Ashford said: "We don't know exactly where these boxes are going - it will probably be eastern Europe or Africa - but they have to be at the collection point in Watton by the second week in November." Helped by friends and relatives, the Lionesses have collected useful items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, flannels, soap, hats, caps, gloves and scarves for the boxes. -
