Keith Ashfield was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick in the provincial general election held June 7, 1999, to represent the constituency of New Maryland.During the Fifty-Fourth Legislature, he was a member of the Legislative Administration Committee, the Standing Committee on Law Amendments, and the Select Committee on Education.On July 6, 1999, he was appointed Deputy Speaker of the House, and he served as Chairman of the Committees of the Whole House.
He was re-elected to serve in the Fifty-Fifth Legislature in the provincial general election held June 9, 2003.He was sworn in as the Minister of Natural Resources on June 27, 2003.He is a member of the Board of Management.
Mr. Ashfield has given much time as a volunteer in his community.He has been an active participant in several school district associations.He was a trustee for School Districts 25 and 17, and he was president and vice-president of the New Brunswick School Trustees Association.He also served as director and as chair of the Finance Committee for the Canadian School Boards Association.
He was born March 28, 1952, in Fredericton, N.B.He is the son of Nora Locke and the late Jack Ashfield.He graduated from Oromocto High School in 1970, and attended the University of New Brunswick from 1970 to 1972, where he took courses in Business Administration.
For several years he owned and operated his own business.
Mr. Ashfield has been actively involved with the Progressive Conservative Party of New Brunswick and, for several years, he served as the director of the Fredericton Progressive Conservative Party Association.
