As new homes spring up for miles in affluent north Oakland County, residents who find Detroit's museums out of reach are unaware they live near a shrine to Detroit's history and a spectacular art collection, said the hall's executive director, Lisa Baylis Ashby.
"We have this burgeoning population and, let's be frank, not that many cultural and historic resources around here," she said.
Ashby, a former official at the Minneapolis Museum of Art and at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, says the time is right to get the word out about Meadow Brook Hall to more than just the good-old-boy network of car collecters, as important as they are.And to more than just those who use the hall for lavish weddings and other parties; $6,000 rents the place for five hours -- food, drinks and furniture setups are extra.
Other cultural experts agree, including Jennifer Radcliff, who heads the Clarkston-based Michigan Historic Preservation Network.
Most people drive by the area and figure it's vacant land, unaware of the mansion hidden behind forests, Radcliff said.
