‘The process forced me to focus on what makes a good teacher and what I can do to help my students achieve,' said Novi's David Ascher.

NOVI -David Ascher felt he needed to challenge himself to become an even better teacher.

That's one of the reasons the sixth-grade Novi teacher decided in August 2002 to become a candidate for National Board Certification, an intense professional development experience and the nation's premier assessment of accomplished teaching practices.

Ascher and seven other MEA members recently received notice they had achieved National Board Certification status.

"The process forced me to focus on what makes a good teacher, how I can become a better teacher and what I can do to help my students achieve," said the Novi Meadows Elementary School educator, who was certified in the early adolescence/generalist category.

For Ascher, the NBC process included preparing portfolios in the areas of social studies, reading and writing, and math and science and taking an assessment exam, a series of six 30-minute tests.

"The portfolios allow you to videotape yourself with your students in the classroom and then reflect on your teaching practices-how and why you do things," Ascher said.

The fact that Ascher became Novi's first NBC teacher came as no surprise to Teri Moblo, president of the Novi EA.
