Marsha Arzy, director of Western Colorado Community College, said the school has graduated three classes of officers thus far, each with about 20 students.

The peace officer standards and training program is an extensive semester-long program. Each applicant must be at least 21 years old with no felony or misdemeanor convictions.

Many instructors at the program are law enforcement officials from around the area, Arzy said, and the program, ironically enough, is funded in part from money seized by law enforcement.

Of the District 51 students who attend college after graduation, about 68 percent head for Mesa State, said Marsha Arzy with Western Colorado Community College.
