    Arzumanyan is ashamed 04:14 pm | October 08, 2009 | Politics

Any actions of protest allowed by the Constitution must be taken in order to not let any document that goes against Armenia's national interests to go into effect, says member of the Armenian National Congress, former RA Foreign Minister Alexander Arzumanyan, touching upon the possible ratification of the pre-signed Turkish-Armenian protocols.

He regretfully touched upon the protests in the Diaspora that were an attempt to stop the protocols through force.

"I am ashamed when the RA President visits foreign countries and the army and police of that country defend him from his compatriots. I can't remember such a shameful and humiliating situation," emphasized Arzumanyan.

Arzumanyan said that he is in favor of such protests, but also regretted to say that different Armenian communities did not say anything about the acts that took place on March 1, 2008.

"What was painful and offensive was that by greeting the president who came to power at the price of the blood shed on March 1, a number of Diaspora Armenian organizations wagged the finger on Azerbaijan's illegitimate government. This double standard in the statements was unacceptable," added Alexander Arzumanyan.

Arzumanyan compared the regional meetings and discussions on the Turkish-Armenian protocols with the Soviet era when, for instance, activists were gathered during the approval of the Constitution and unanimously accepted it.

"This is similar to that process that is characteristic of dictatorial regimes like the USSR, Iraq where 100% of the people voted for the president and Armenia where elections are falsified as much as needed," said Arzumanyan.

As far as the opening of borders is concerned, according to Arzumanyan, it is necessary for Armenia and Turkey. "As for the preconditions, that is a different story and here is where I have concerns. I don't accept and don't understand the preconditions, establishment of diplomatic relations and normalization of relations for opening the border," says Arzumanyan.

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexander Arzumanyan says that those who don't accept the Madrid Principles and demand the resignation of Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandyan are inconsistent and insincere.
    ...
"Nalbandyan is Serzh Sargsyan's screw," said Arzumanyan who went on to explain what he meant.
    ...
Arzumanyan believes that the resignation of the person leading the process will turn things around for the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process.

Touching upon the news about the restart of the Nagorno-Karabakh war, as well as the announcement of the OSCE Minsk Group French Co-Chair according to whom a war will not start again, Arzumanyan said:

"If the international community does not agree with the solution based on consensus and can't force that, one of the ways of forcing is the restart of a war. Belligerent declarations signal the danger of a new war."

Arzumanyan thinks that comparing the Madrid Principles and the proposals that no longer exist is a waste of time. In any case, Arzumanyan touched upon Vardan Oskanyan's statement according to which he fought to be free from the "Lisbon Principles" for ten years, saying that the current authorities are using the expression "Lisbon Principles" from time to time to criticize Levon Ter-Petrosyan and his team with respect to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Arzumanyan considers the current Madrid Principles unacceptable for Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh and will do everything so that no document will be signed. He says that the document in question doesn't include even one sign of the self-determination of nations.

"In the principles it is stated that after the signing of the treaty, Nagorno-Karabakh will be granted an interim status ensuring the security of the people of Karabakh and self-governance. If Karabakh's interim status is going to be self-governance, that is absolutely unacceptable for Azerbaijan."

Arzumanyan excludes the resolution of the conflict without the participation of Karabakh.
