The allure of Lee regaining its status as a Senate district power base, after Naples' Burt Saunders rise to power in 1998, is overtaken by a new face from West Palm Beach.David Aronberg, an assistant Florida attorney general working on consumer fraud and money-laundering, earns the legislative assignment over Frank Mann, whose family is a household name in Lee County arts and politics.

Aronberg is a real deal Democrat.

Aronberg's loyalty to his roots, plus his quick grip on health care, national security and education, make him one to watch for nearly 107,000 Lee voters.

Election 2002: Mann, GOP apologize to Aronberg over... - [Cached Version]

Except it was David T. Aronberg who filed the suit, not David A. Aronberg, who is fighting Mann for the state Senate District 27 seat.
    ...
Aronberg, an assistant attorney general in West Palm Beach, was working in the Bush White House when the suit was filed by the other Dave Aronberg.

"I never suspected for a minute there'd be two Dave Aronbergs practicing law in Palm Beach County," Mann said."The odds are pretty slim."

Aronberg described the mailing, which went to around 50,000 voters, as the worst kind of politics.

"It was misleading, and it was misleading about the wrong person," he said."Two people were defamed by a single ad."

Mann said both parties typically do what's called "opposition research," searching newspapers and court records for negative information on the opposing candidate. He said that technically the Republican Party produced and paid for the mailing, but he's accepted responsibility and has personally apologized.

He's not the only one apologizing.
    ...
Aronberg is in it to win, a well-financed candidate with name recognition in the portion of the cross-state district that stretches from south Lee County to the West Palm Beach area.

Mann said he approved the ad in concept after he was told about the lawsuit and what was believed to have been Aronberg's role.

Aronberg said he can't understand the mistake, given the fact the two Aronbergs have different middle names, different addresses and he was working at the White House on a fellowship at the time the suit was filed.Aronberg routinely mentions the White House connection at campaign appearances.

    The election is Nov. 5.
