Chocolate candy kisses were sold , $1 for two kisses , with proceeds from that sale going toward New York's Alzheimer's chapter , said Mike Arnold , executive director of the Alzheimer's Association of West Michigan.
From the ( Alzheimer's Association ) office in New York City , they can see all the devastation that's happened from two weeks ago , Arnold said.A series of e-mails from the head of the New York office , describing the aftermath of the attack , are posted on a memory wall alongside pictures and messages honoring those whose lives were impacted by Alzheimer's.
It's very interesting from the perspective of someone who is that close , Arnold said. For us , it's another way that it's touched our hearts here..
In the aftermath of that attack , the New York Alzheimer's chapter canceled its annual Memory Walk because its planned route went right past the World Trade Center. It couldn't even hold a memorial service honoring those lost to Alzheimer's because the park the chapter wanted to meet in is being used as a headquarters for police and fire crews still digging out from the attack , Arnold said.
Because of the situation in New York , the national Alzheimer's Association asked each local chapter to raise $100 to send toward the New York chapter's efforts , offsetting the loss of money it would have raised had it been able to hold its Memory Walk.It goes to benefit their programs and services , Arnold said.
The national Alzheimer's Association hopes local chapters can raise a total of $20 , 000 to send to the New York chapter , Arnold said.
Many of the walkers who turned out Monday know firsthand the impact of Alzheimer's on someone they care about.Jean Van Den Beldt came from Middleville to walk in the Holland event , remembering her mother , who has battled Alzheimer's for 13 years.

About 17 , 000 people in West Michigan are believed to have Alzheimer's , and with the population growth in the region combined with people living longer lives , that number could quadruple by the year 2050 , Arnold said.
No figures on how much the Holland walk raised were available Monday night , but organizers are hoping that Memory Walks throughout West Michigan will raise at least $30 , 000 by the end of October , Arnold said.
Saturday's Memory Walk in Grand Rapids raised about $7 , 000 in donations from walkers , with more expected to come in through corporate sponsorships.
Proceeds will stay in West Michigan and be used for support groups and programs for Alzheimer's patients and their loved ones.Directed contributions from some will be used for research efforts to find a cure for the disease , Arnold said.
