Carlo Arghittu isn't ready to hang up his boots anytime soon.

The 33-year-old St. Catharines Roma Wolves forward played almost the entire game Wednesday night in his team's 2-1 victory over North York Astros.

Arghittu didn't figure in the scoring - Antonio Stranges and Danny Gallagher took care of that - but nevertheless was a big factor in the win.
    ...
"I plan to play as long as I can," said Arghittu, a Grade 8 teacher at St. Anthony's School in St. Catharines."There are some things I can do to help the team.

"Sometimes, it's like I'm 19 again out there."

Arghittu, often playing half games, was already doing his best to help young striker Antonio Stranges, the Wolves' leading scorer, and direct play at the front end.
    ...
Despite playing the bulk of the game against the Astros, Arghittu had plenty left in his legs to run with his two-year-old son, Piercarlo, once the game ended.

Arghittu said his son is already showing a passion for the game, kicking away at a ball in the basement every chance he gets.
    ...
"He's already better than me," said Arghittu.
    ...
Arghittu conceded he made plenty such runs for the Wolves, but often found himself overmatched by defenders, waiting for support.

"That's what we want to get away from," Arghittu said.
    ...
Arghittu had one shot at the net, but blasted it over the crossbar late in the game.

Carlo Arghittu, 33, is the Club Roma Wolves' longest-serving player.
    ...
Sitting on the sidelines at Roma Park, Carlo Arghittu watches intently as his teammates start practice.

His thoughts go back to when he was a 17-year-old Holy Cross Secondary School student, often running from a soccer practice or game at school to work out with the Wolves.

That was 16 years ago, but Arghittu remembers a later Wolves team, comprised almost entirely of Niagara talent, winning a playoff championship on their home pitch.

"This team reminds me a lot of that one," said Arghittu, now 33 and the longest-serving Wolves player.
    ...
    Arghittu has already noticed that.
    ...
Arghittu, who is entering his 12th year with the team, spent some time playing and training in Europe before returning to Canada and attending teachers college. He's teaching at St. Anthony's School in St. Catharines.

And although he's listed as a player-assistant coach, he's quick to downplay the title.

"Saying you're going to coach means one day you have to hang up the shoes," he said in measured tones."That's something I'm not prepared to do.I'm ready to play because I feel I can contribute to this team.

"Like I've said, the day the boys are outrunning me, that's when I'll say I'm done and I'll consider doing something else."

Arghittu also said to call him an assistant coach "would be unfair because we have an excellent coach here right now and he's doing a fabulous job."

Arghittu notices another similarity between this year's team and the 2001 playoff champions: they play with a passion for the game.

And when it comes to a passion for the game, Arghittu could be the poster boy - he wears his heart on his sleeve when it comes to Roma soccer.

"Absolutely," he said in agreement, "and anybody that plays for this team or any other club should give everything they have for the club.
