CLYDE -- Dr. Alfred Arcand puts the family in family practice.
...
But Arcand didn't stop there; he inspired all six of his children to work in some form of specialized medical profession. In addition to Albert, Dr. Arcand has another son who works as an orthopedist, another as a general surgeon in Worcester and a daughter who works as a chemist and then another currently in orthopedic training.
"I guess I must have had something to do with it," Arcand modestly said."They have all graduated and gotten their Ph.D.s."
More than just being an inspiration for his children and a devoted husband to his wife Louise of more than 40 years, as a medical practitioner, Dr. Arcand has also been there for countless Valley residents suffering from major illnesses and seasonal colds.
He has diagnosed and medicated others, delivered babies and performed minor surgeries.
Most recently however, Dr. Arcand has been honored by Kent Hospital for his 25 years of service as the medical director of the hospital's advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) education program.ACLS is an international standard for cardiac resuscitation in which physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists and emergency medical technicians must be annually recertified in ACLS techniques.
Dr. Arcand spearheads this ACLS initiative at Kent and last year alone, more than 170 health care professionals received specialized training under his guidance.
...
"On behalf of the countless lives that Dr. Arcand has saved by his skill and the sharing of that skill through education, I am pleased to award the American Heart Association's Citation of Outstanding Performance for his many years of service."
Among the mix of daily tasks that Dr. Arcand juggles, including his private family practice in West Warwick and his oversight of the ACLS initiative at Kent, he is also chief of staff at the 359-bed community hospital, a member of the hospital's board of trustees and a past president of the medical staff.
Although he said he absolutely loves what he does, above all else, he said some of his favorite things to do are gardening, hunting, fishing and traveling.Canada, where his wife is from, is one of his favorite places to visit, he said.Spending time with his 10 grandchildren is also one of his favorite pastimes.
"I definitely enjoy what I do," Dr. Arcand said, "but now that I am 69 years old, I guess I do plan to slow down gradually."
