A pack of cherry tomatoes rose to $3.99 from $1.99 over several weeks, said Brian Andrews, produce manager at Stater Brothers at 1717 E. Vista Chino Road.
Premium tomatoes at Jensen's, Ralph's and Stater Brothers have already hit $3.99 a pound at three stores in Palm Springs, a random survey by The Desert Sun indicated on Friday.
Prices for other large or on-the-vine tomatoes have crept to $3.29 and $3.49 as well, and Roma tomatoes are going for about $2.49 to $2.99.
Andrews said a "green sheet" produce bulletin that keeps grocers apprised of crop conditions indicates weather-related damage but no real shortages.
